Obituary for Ewald Anton Baumgardner

It is with deep sadness that the family of Ewald Baumgardner announced his passing on December 26, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born on November 7, 1930 on the homestead farm in Flat Valley, the seventh in a family of eleven children. He pursued a career of mixed farming and became a “lifetime” supporter of the Goodsoil community.
Ewald leaves to mourn three sisters: Emillie Stremick, Paula Ehnes, and Evelyn VanCleemput and brother Karl, brothers-in-law Joe Zuchotzki and John VanCleemput. Also, many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Anna (Exner) and Jacob, sisters Mary Roth, Julia (infancy), Caroline Degenhardt, Matilda Degenhardt, Elizabeth Peters and Theresa Zuchotzki; sister-in-law Joan Baumgardner (Potts), and brothers-in-law Joe Roth, Martin and Harry Degenhardt, John Peters, Frank Stremick, Anton Ehnes and Anton Feser.
After completing his education in the Flat Valley Elementary School, he had the responsibility of transforming the family farm from “horsepower” to tractor. He expanded the homestead into a successful mixed farming operation. He retired in 1998 and moved to the village of Goodsoil.
Ewald was a very generous supporter of his community. He was a director on the Goodsoil Credit Union for 13 years. He served the Flat Valley area as LID (pre-municipality) Representative for four years, and worked with the Goodsoil Recreation Board and coached the Pee Wee hockey team.
The highlight of his volunteer service was the St. Boniface Roman Catholic Parish. He was active on the parish council and many committees. For 34 years he was an offertory counter and recorder. His role in the Fr. Schultz K of C #5479 was very important to him, demonstrated by his position of Treasurer (10yrs) and Grand Knight.
Ewald’s commitment to social justice went beyond Canada. Through the Catholic Sponsorship Program, he donated funds for the support of several orphaned boys in the Ukraine. He contributed to “Save the Family” program which directed financial help to two families in Karala (Calicut Diocese) in India.
His recreation included participation in hockey, fastball and curling and he became a “fan” in later life. During his retirement he joined several tour groups to explore the USA and a special vacation in Hawaii.
We will miss but remember our brother, uncle and friend. He lived his life well as a “kind, gentle and industrious person”.

A funeral Mass will be held on July 31, 2021 at 11:00am at St. Boniface Church in Goodsoil Saskatchewan.
