Lindy Becker was born Loretta Melinda Zinger on July 24, 1911, in Howiedale, Saskatchewan (near Major) where she lived until 1920 when she moved with her family to Kerrobert, SK. There she attended public school until entering normal school in 1929.
After graduation, Lindy taught in rural schools near Denzel and Maklin from 1932-1938. Finding it impossible to earn a living as a teacher in those days, she returned to Denzel to complete a hairdressing course. After working for a year in Denzel, Lindy headed north to the frontier town of Meadow Lake, arriving on Nov. 5, 1940. It is here she began her vocation as a much-loved hairdresser, a career that was to span another 56 years.
After the death of her father in 1941, her Mother and her sister Freana joined her in Meadow Lake. When Freana married in 1945, Lindy built a house for herself and her Mother (1876-1962), and lived there till 2011 when she moved first to the Meadow Lake Pioneer Lodge, and then to the L. Gervais Memorial Health Centre in Goodsoil, SK.
In 1954 Lindy married Andrew Becker and lived in Kitchener, Ont. until 1957. When she returned to Meadow Lake she started "Lindy's Beauty Nook", a business she operated until it's sale in 1994. However she continued to serve her faithful customers until retiring in 1996 at age 85, with a few special customers continuing to enjoy her friendship and services out of her home until she was 96.
Her business motto was: "We make Wives of Sweethearts and Sweethearts of Wives", and she truly did. She did it by being sister, friend, and confidant, Auntie, God-Mother, devoted to her church, her family and her community. We will all miss her smile, her wisdom, her wit, her love, her being.
